Don't Throw Your Shoeboxes Away, They Have Soles TOO!: An Object Lesson in 6 Parts -Heaven Jackson

1.The purchase A couple of weeks ago when cleaning my room, I stumbled across some formal heels shoved under my bed. I noticed the sides of them being smushed and a few spots of discoloration. When looking for the box they belonged to so that I could prevent any further damage (I usually keep my shoes in boxes, so this was odd to me), it dawned on me how insignificant shoeboxes become for some people once the shoes are taken out of the box, especially being that they are one of the most helpful products in terms of storage and preservation. We see shoeboxes, strictly for the product inside of them, not because of what they are, or what they have the possibility to be. Not only that, but they are important to a very essential accessory of our personality: our shoes. We will get into that later. So, let us start from the beginning. You go to a store and browse around for a bit. You did not come with anything particular in mind, so you wait until something catches your eye. You...

The Age of the Face Mask by Emma Krug

Emma Krug Professor Sinowitz Principles of Literary Study 12 May 2020 The Age of the Face Mask   Today, in May of 2020 in Cincinnati, Ohio, I have my own customized face mask sitting on our hallway table right next to my car keys. My pink mask is handmade and patterned with Disney princesses. I received my mask in the mail two weeks ago from my younger cousin Nicola, and that day was the first time I ever wore a face mask to cover my mouth and nose. Before, I only associated these masks with surgeons or doctors, but now I have my own to take with me whenever I leave the house. About a month and a half ago, Nicola decided to make as many face masks as she could from home with her own materials and sewing machine. At a rate of approximately 15 minutes per mask, Nicola was able to produce 50 masks for ER doctors and healthcare workers and an extra 15 for family members and friends. She mailed the 50 masks (along with homemade cookies and a thank you note) to a Chicago h...

Mirrors|Portals

Sophia Featherstone Principles of Literary Studies Professor Sinowitz 05/12/20 Mirrors|Portals             A mirror is a silent witness. No matter its form, a mirror will instantaneously record and relay every momentary image within its view--even when we are not around to perceive this; a mirror cannot help but continue to reflect. For this reason, mirrors can never be seen for what they are, but are invariably perceived as a vessel for their surroundings. Despite the mirror’s simplicity and virtual invisibility, it is incredibly difficult to define exactly what a ‘mirror’ is. It is dual, simultaneously tangible and intangible--defined as a physical reflective surface and by the entity that it reflects. It can reflect in a literal sense or in a metaphorical sense, in the way that a person can act as a mirror for another person, a painting can reflect a person’s image or emotions, or a house can be reflective of a pers...

Stop and Smell the Rosé: An Object Lesson on Wine Bottles (Whitney Johnson)

Stop and Smell the Rosé: An Object Lesson on Wine Bottles Back in January, I took a Winter Term on the French Revolution, and I got to visit Europe for the first time and spend ten days in Paris. Within the first day of our arrival, I visited a cute little wine shop just down the street from our hotel. I am not sure what I expected, but I was definitely surprised. The entire store was smaller than the size of my bedroom, and the walls were lined from floor to ceiling with wooden lattice wine racks. Cradled in the nooks of the lattice shelves were wine bottles with hundreds of different shapes and sizes and colors. I was awestruck by the aesthetic beauty of the multitude of bottles that dazzled the little shop around me. As I spent more time walking around in the city, I realized that there were little shops like this everywhere. While still in Paris, for lunch one day, some companions and I stopped for lunch at an inconspicuous Italian restaurant on a busy street. As soon as we w...
